Issue Overview

Turkish Airlines is making headlines again, this time with a large Airbus order that includes both widebodies (A350s) and narrowbodies (A321neos). The airline, which flew a mere 98 planes on the eve of the global financial crisis in 2008, aims to fly (gulp) 800 by 2033. How’s that for a growth story?

The story is mostly good from airlines providing updates about demand. Southwest and Alaska joined Delta and JetBlue in affirming favorable trends this holiday season. Latam gave an investor update as well, expressing general bullishness about the year ahead. Air New Zealand, however, called out some weakness in certain markets, aggravated by intensifying competitive pressures.

Air France-KLM and Gol each delivered lengthy investor updates. Gol’s rival Azul unveiled a few more A330-900 orders. And in Canada, Transat shared its latest earnings, adding that demand is still strong but coming down some from earlier highs.
